Well this morning was pretty rough since I only had about 4 and a half hours since last night we were all up picking up chickens. Which really was quite an experience. Its amazing how one day of 90 degrees and not enough ventilation can kill so many birds. Mike said it can happen to anyone, and usually happens to everyone once. Anyhow we all were up and out by 7 like normal.
Corey came last night to help pick up birds so he called in this morning to say his back hurt and he'd be calling around to some doctors but anyway... today I did the feeding by myself to start.
These are the distillers in buckets for the lowline cows.
Next it was time to check calves. I saw a couple yesterday who were about ready to pop so I went out to check this morning. There was no calves out in the field but there was one in the angus commercial cattle pen. Poor little bull calf was a still born. He was a big ole calf. The momma was definitely sad but better out of her than in her.
Can't see the calves to well, but thats them early in the morning.
Caleb did the feeding for the cattle in the barns then I went to feed the bulls down a ways. I'll probably go tomorrow so I'll try and get a picture tomorrow.
Feeding the cows.
Next was the exciting job of burning bags. It was real windy yesterday so we didn't get to burn much. We have a huge pile of bags in the seed barn and it just looks sloppy so we tried to burn some up. We did get through probably half of them but it got to windy so the burning bags start flying up in the air and burn big black spots in the grass. So I think I'll probably be doing some burning tomorrow also.
Mini bonfire in the middle of the day.
Next we did the test plot. I know your probably saying we did that the other day why again?! Saturday we did the corn for the test plot so today we did the soybeans. We planted 8 different types of seed from Kruger and did 1 type of seed from Pioneer to compare how much better Kruger in general is better.
Mike planting.
Yes stakes once again to mark the rows, then the red flags also for double check.
Next I hand planted the gullys where there is a lot of water and its to muddy for the planter to get through. I took about a half of that blue garbage can of seed out and used all of it on 4 wet spots.
Had to drive a little bit to find them.
The field I worked on today.
Can't really see him but Mike is out there to the left of that circular barn.
I had a slight break after lunch it was super nice because I got to take about a half hour nap. After that I took extra seed to Mike so he could officially finish planting... Thats right planting season is OVER!!
Hard to see in this one too but the farm is back center of the picture.
Thats right.... It was 99 degrees out today. With about 80% humidity. It was a real hot one.
After all that we got machinery ready to go back to Chris' place.
Caleb is on the right of the field cultivator putting in pins to lock the sides up.
I got to drive the tractor for the first time today. I've driven tractors before but its been quite a while so it was pretty fun.
Me in the drivers seat of the John Deere.
I drove the grain drill back to Chris'. It wasn't to bad at first but when going down hill the drill would sway back and forth and make the truck fish tale. It was real annoying but I got there safely which i all that matters.
The grain drill.
Well its about time to just relax. I'm so tired and ready to go to bed. Its just a little to early for that.
