Twins!

Since we had an inch and a half of rain last night everything was pretty muddy. Today Cory was back till round noon so he helped me do feeding. Then I went and checked calves of course. Today I found a super mommy. Lets just say someone was real hungry and was robbing off another momma.

Two babies on one momma.

Then while I was checking calves this calf decided it’d be fun to act like he was dying I shook him a bit and tried getting him up and he didn’t want to get up at all. So then about 5 mins later I walked past and he was all sitting up and happy.

Fed the bulls again and found the drop inlet there flooded.

414 fullbood bull eating, inlet in top right.

So I know I’ve talked a bit about the seed and all so I thought I’d take a picture of the seed shed and the grain elevator. To the right is a barn used to hold a sick a bull and it has a room that holds the saddles for the horses.   The bins to the right are like bulk bags but hard plastic instead. Then there are pallets to the right of those.

Next we started getting ready the chicken barns for chickens that come on Monday. I sprayed insecticide on the whole barn to keep the beetles and bugs down.

The Sprayer
Chris, Mike, Caleb and Cory all at some point worked on the West chicken barn trying to get that water out we discovered yesterday.

The water would run down the hill then they later scooped up a lot of the muck and piled it.

I made my mark on the farm.
I went out to the field to check calves and found a cow with twins. Finding them was just the start of the fun. After a bit I went back to check and make sure they were both up and sucking on their momma. The cow had taken the heifer and left the bull calf down bottom of the hill. I then went and got the bull calf after a while and took him up to the top barn where the bull usually is. We then had quite the adventure as the moma didn’t want to come so we proceeded to bring the other calf up to the barn and then tromped through the mud to get her up with her babies. We then proceeded to get the bull calf sucking on the mom. I later went and tagged the calves... Which I did incorrectly so I had to rip them out and tag the other ears.

Tagger and scale.

Later I went back to the barn to spread PLT (Poultry Litter Treatment). This neutralizes the ammonia in the litter so it isn't so harsh smelling. While I was making my rounds there was a bird kind of flying all around. He then landed and I was driving toward, well I thought like any other bird he'd fly away as I got closer.... Well he didn't. Yes I hit a bird in the chicken barns. I then stopped, picked it up and threw him outside.

About 5 PLT bags fit into the spreader at one time.

The dead bird.

Iowa is actually quite pretty. Here are a few shots from South West of the house.

The south west fields.

Theres an old small chute there to the right.

The shop and fuel tanks. (NE of the house).

Heres what the barn looked like after a bit of scraping. Looks a ton better than yesterday.

After a pretty good day of work we all headed over to Caleb's house and the grain bins to mow and trim. We then had the great surprise of having Chris and Amanda coming over with the kids.

Caleb and Noah heading to the house with the mowers.

Noah and Stran.

Grandpa and Stran. That boy is so happy.

Stran and mommy! (Amanda)
If you can't tell Stran is pretty popular. He's always giggles and smiles.

An end to a beautiful day.
